RECAP THE CONCEPTS
Male reproductive system
The male reproductive system consists of the penis and testes (testicles).
Tiny sperm cells are produced inside the testes.
Sperm cells travel out of the testes through the sperm ducts.
Female reproductive system
The female reproductive system consists of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, womb and vagina.
Ovaries release one egg cell every 28 days (approximately).
The egg travels down the fallopian tubes to the womb.
Fertilisation takes place when a sperm (male reproductive cell) meets an egg (female reproductive cell) at the fallopian tube.
The fertilised egg will start to divide to form more cells. After which, it will attach itself to the wall of the womb and continue to grow as a developing baby (embryo) for 9 months.
The developing baby draws oxygen, water and digested food from the mother’s blood through the umbilical cord. Waste materials including carbon dioxide is removed from the baby through the umbilical cord to the mother.
Heredity
Heredity is the passing on of characteristics from parents to young.
The nucleus in our cells contain hereditary information that determines our characteristics (traits), e.g. colour of our eyes or skin.
