RECAP THE CONCEPTS
Magnetic Force
When unlike poles (North and South) of 2 magnets face each other, the magnets will attract each other.
When like poles (South and South or North and North) of 2 magnets face each other, the magnets will repel each other.
If a magnet is placed next to an unknown object and the object repelled away from the magnet. The object must be a magnet. Only 2 magnets can repel each other.
Magnetic and non-magnetic materials
A magnet can also attract objects (called magnetic objects) that are made up of magnetic materials. Some examples of magnetic materials are steel, iron, nickel and cobalt.
Magnetic force is able to act at a distance. It can pass through non-magnetic materials but cannot pass through magnetic materials.
Making magnets
A magnet can be made by the STROKING METHOD:
Stroke a magnetic object with 1 pole of the magnet in one direction.
A magnet can be made by the ELECTRICAL METHOD:
Coil a wire around a magnetic object. Allow electricity to flow through the wire.
This creates a temporary magnet. The electromagnet will lose its magnetism when the electric current is turned off.
The electromagnet can be made stronger by increasing the number of coils or by adding more batteries.
