Ace planted a single papaya seed in a greenhouse. The seed grew into a healthy papaya plant with flowers and Ace was hoping to harvest some papaya fruits. Despite the fact that there were flowers blossoming from the plant, the plant did not bear any fruit. Ace observed the flowers of the plant. All the flowers have the following parts: petals, filament and anther.

a) Explain why the papaya plant did not bear any fruits even though it has grown into a healthy adult plant.

Answer:

The papaya plant only has flowers. It cannot be pollinated as it does not have . It also cannot be fertilised as the flowers have no ovules which contain cells. The flowers also have no that can develop into a fruit.


b) Would Ace have obtained fruits if he had planted a single papaya tree that bore only female flowers? Explain your answer.

Answer:

Ace will not obtain any fruits if there was only one female papaya tree in the greenhouse. The flowers will not have any that produce . Since the greenhouse is enclosed, cannot carry pollen grains to the flowers of the papaya tree inside. The flowers will not be . Fertilisation will not occur and the ovaries will not develop into fruits.
