SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS!
Making a Decoration with… Salt!
Items Needed:
· Black paper
· A paint brush
· A beaker/cup filled with approx. 100 ml of water
· A teaspoon
· A pair of scissors
· Fine Salt
· A hairdryer
Follow these simple steps:
1. Cut a piece of black paper into a shape of your choice! (e.g. Christmas tree, decoration ball)
2. Scoop about 10 spoons of salt into the beaker of water and mix it thoroughly. You can add in more salt if needed.
3. Dip your paintbrush into the mixture of salt and water, and use it to paint these flake patterns on the shape you previously cut out.
4. You may paint over the lines a few times if you wish. Make sure that there is enough salt mixture on the brush
5. Carefully use the hairdryer to blow over your salt and water painting. The heat from the hairdryer allows the water to gain heat and evaporate as water vapour.
6. Salt will be left behind on the paper, revealing your artwork!
Cultivating Salt Crystals
Items Needed:
· Petri dishes of the same size/flat plastic containers
· Different types of salt (fine salt, epsom salt, pink salt, etc.)
· 500 ml of warm water
· A beaker/jug
Steps:
1. Pour 500ml of warm water into the beaker. Add a large spoonful of salt and stir till the salt is dissolved.
2. Continue to add salt and stir until the solution is saturated and no more salt can dissolve.
3. Pour a small amount of the mixture onto a petri dish.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 with the other types of salt that you have into the other petri dishes. (You can use other flat plastic containers instead of a petri dish. It will be best for the containers to be the same size.)
5. Leave your petri dishes by the window, where there is more sunlight. Evaporation will take place at a faster rate when there is a higher surrounding temperature.
6. Observe the different salt crystals forming from the different types of salt!
7. Record down your observations (e.g. How long does it take for the salt crystals to appear? How do the crystals look like?)
